Chatuge Gun Club Has a New Shootist
                                                                                                                     By: Gene Blackburn

The points have been tallied and Keith McMahan is the 2008 Shootist

        Congratulations Keith!

Back in 2006 our club president, Ed Jones, came up with the idea of a Shootist Award to be given annually as an incentive to encourage
more members to compete in monthly matches.  The executive board approved and the competition began.
Russ Schoetker was the 2006 winner.  Rick Steffan won in 2007.
The idea was to have a level playing field for all competitors, so the match directors were instructed to select four (4) matches yearly, in
advance, and award Shootist points for those matches.  Any competitor who was serious about winning the award could contact the match
director to find out if an upcoming match counted toward shootist points.
One point is awarded just for showing up.  Winners get  an additional three points, 2nd place gets two points and  3rd place gets one point.
Three examples of how it works:
Example #1:  Cowboy silhouette has a rimfire and centerfire category, so if you win both the rimfire and centerfire  matches you would

accumulate eight points.  Three for each rifle and two for showing up.
Example #2:  Carol Rosenqvist's smallbore and smallbore hunter rifle silhouette matches have different classifications;  B, A, AA, AAA and

Master.  A “B” shooter could win B class in both matches and accumulate as many points as the match winner.
Example #3: The steel plate pistol match has three categories:  revolver, semi-auto with iron sights and semi-auto with optics or red dot

 sights.

Assuming a competitor shoots all classes and wins, he or she would amass ten points.
Some years ago Troy Lawton had just won the NRA National Silhouette Championship and  when asked by a reporter, “What is the single
most important aspect of winning a National Championship title”, he said,  “There are a lot of little things that go into winning these matches.
I'm not sure there is a single thing, except that you have to show up!”
You might think “Well, duh”,  but the past winners of the Chatuge Gun Club Shootist Award must have decided early on that showing up
for as many matches as possible was the key.  Not to take anything away from the winners, because they are top shooters and in order to win,
you've got to do more than just show up, but look at last years stats:
  • 37 matches counted toward the award.
  • The winner competed in 27 of those matches
  • The second and third place finishers competed in 22 and 17 matches respectively.
  • There were 382 entries by 72 individuals.
  • 20 was the highest number of competitors in a single match.
  • 5 was the lowest number attending a match.
The competition runs from April 1 to March 31 of the following year.  This would be a good year to make a run for the “top gun”
award.

Watch your newsletter for the match dates.  Remember, we are doing this for fun and if you have never shot in competition, now is a good
time to start.  All the match directors encourage new shooters and are willing to help you get started.
